-It was said that resistance tactics and means 'to oppose the strategies of '. And countering the techniques and "technologies of power" that impose isolation, distraction and domination through surveillance, entertainment, and force.

What is example of electronic disturbance?
-virus, trojan horse, worm, bomb, back door.

What is a software virus?

What is a software Trojan Horse?
-To break security of damage a system.

What are counterproposals for 'Resistances'?

  • what’s in a game engine?
  • game “mods”
  • two issues to consider from film theory

What's in a game engine?

- There are many things in a game engine. For example graphics, physics, A.I in a game engine.

- graphics(visual), physics(other player, effects), A.I.(how to game, coding, the enemy)

What is the "mods"?

- Modification(Mod) is used in fps games, rpg games, and so on. Mod can be entirely new games in themselves and partial conversions (total conversions) .

Two issues to consider from film theory .

  1. Identification - A player have identification for relate to the characters and action on the screen .
  2. Space - Player can play same game at different place. Plays see or do in game space.

Finish...

These days so many people play the game. There are various games. I don't like game, but my major connected with game. So this class give me instructive lesson.

What is the key point of the class?
"People often interact with media technologies as though the technologies were people."

related points : ethics

  • Technologies can’t be a human, but It have ability for approch human. Someday if technologies have personality, I think it is human.

related points : aesthetics & teleology

cf., the philosopher Immanuel Kant’s theories of aesthetics detailed in his book critique of judgment

related points : design

  • If we view objects, technologies and natural phenomenon as if they do, in fact, have goals and intentions, then we will design like an artificial intelligence researcher.
  • On the other hand, if we view objects, technologies and natural phenomenon as if the just look like they have goals and intentions, then we will design like a tool builder for human “users” or “operators” of our tools.

where does HCI meet AI?

what problem does Weizenbaum’s
ELIZA system address or solve?

  • the artificial intelligence answer: it does (or does not) behave like a human and is therefore successful (or not successful)
  • the ethnomethodology answer: it is taken to be a like a person in a conversation and thus simply works like most other technologies in a social situation

Finish..

frankly say.. I don't understand this class ㅠㅠ So, I try understand this topic with PPT.

Today's Focus
  • Who is Turing?
  • Turing’s “imitation game”
  • Artificial intelligence
  • What is GPS?

Who is Turing?

He is founder of computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematician, philosopher, codebreaker, and a gay man. He published"On Computable Numbers with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem", which postulated the Turing Machine. Return to Cambridge, Introduced to German 'Enigma cipher machine'. And he breaking of U-boat Enigma, saving battle of the Atlantic.

What is Turing’s “imitation game”?

It is played with three people, a man, a woman, and an interrogator who may be of either sex. The interrogator stays in a room apart from the other two. The object of the game for the interrogator is to determine which of the other two is the man and which is the woman. This game's mission is to find real woman(or man). Then from his thinking, we thought 'When computer runs, The computer can thinking?'

Artificial intelligence

  • Who start?
Marvin Minsky said (1963) “... artificial intelligence [AI] is the science of making machines do things that would require intelligence [as] if done by [humans]”
  • Aritificial intelligence research area is Knowledge Representation, Programming Languages Natural Language (e.g., Story) Understanding, Speech Understanding, Vision, Robotics
    Machine Learning, Planning ....

What is GPS?

GPS is what is known in AI as a “planner.” It is a computer program for theorems proof, geometirc problems and chess playing. But GPS has the "frame problem". Frame problem is
the problem of deciding what parts of the internal model to update when a change is made to the model or the external world.

After class...

I saw AI in movie and novel. At first start so early that my opinion. Until now so many reseaches about AI published. Imaginary AI come true soon. But if computer same as human being, it is very fearful.

4월 첫주 SUMMARY

Today's Key points

  • New media technologies usually reinforce existing social networks or even work to isolate people.
  • When new media technologies facilitate new social networks, they simultaneously challenge existing social, political and economic relationships.

1. social networks as science

  • social network analysis is an interdisciplinary social science, but has been of especial concern to sociologists
  • At first social networks is the field of social science. But recently, physicists and mathematicians have made large contributions to understanding networks in general (as graphs) and thus contributed to an understanding of social networks too.
  • If people A and B connect to the same people, they have equivalent positions in networks.
  • If people A connect separate networks, A have bridging capital.
  • If people B are central to a network you have bonding capital.

2. social networks as technology

  • email, newsgroups, and weblogs.
  • Like 'Amazon.com'(Book store), When We want buy book, the recommender systems give me the information of another book which people who bought this book.

3. social networks as popular culture

  • Like a Kevin Bacon's number, Kevin bacon has number 0 and actor A, if appeared in a movie with kevin bacon, has a bacon number of 1 .
An actor B, if appear in a movie with A, has a bacon number of 2 .

After class

We make social network any time, any where, any people. My social network so complexity also.

I don't try draw My social network grap, but it's look like interesting.

  5. What is "HTTP'?

Who is tim berners-lee?

Tim Berners-Lee is the Director of the World WIde Web Consortium. He wrote the first web client and server in 1990. His specifications of URIs, HTTP and HTML were refined as Web technology spread.

What is 'WWW'?

'www' is short name of the 'Worl Wide Web'. The World Wide Web is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the internet. With Wed browser, a user views Web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia and navigates between them using hyperlinks.

  • Tim Berners-Lee said
“The WWW was developed to be a pool of human knowledge, which would allow collaborators in remote sites to share their ideas and all aspects of a common project.” This speech shows motivation of the reserch(the world wide web).
  • What is the stated genealogy of the technology?
–bush’s memex; nelson’s writings on hypertext; berners-lee’s early implementations
  • 'WWW' is a collaboratively authored hypertext and standard.
  • It like a ISO, IETF, REC...etc.

What is 'URL'?

'URL' is shortname of Uniform Resource Locator, the global address of documents and other resources on the world wide wed.

What is 'HTML'?

HTML(HyperText Markup Language) is the predominant markup language for web pages. It provides a means to describe the structure of text-based information in a document — by denoting certain text as links, headings, paragraphs, lists, and so on — and to supplement that text with interactive forms, embedded images, and other objects.

What is "HTTP'?

AFTER CLASS...

A word is so confused. URL, URN, HTTP, HTML ...

Today's focus
  1. What is 'Hypertext'?
  2. Tristan Tzara & 'cut-ups'
  3. Who is Douglas engelbart?

We have something to think before start class.

1. What is digital media?

- I think... digital media is 'connect people' 'change' and 'developement' in our life.

2. Two keypoints for the course.

a. When a medium is ney, it is often used to simulate old media.

b. New media do not replace old media, they displace them.

(from Marshall McLuhan's book 'Understanding Media' )

What is 'Hypertext'?

- Hypertext is new form of writing, reading and thinking. It is one way that digital media has been understood.

Who is Tristan Tzara?

- Tristan Tzara is a dadaist poet. Tzara wrote the first Dada texts.

- How did he write?

  1. Take a newspaper.
  2. Take a pair ot scissors.
  3. Choose an article as long as you are planning to make your poem.
  4. Cut out the article.
  5. Then cut out each of the words that make up this article and put them in a bag.
  6. Shake it gently.
  7. Then take out the scraps one after the ather in the order in shich they left the bag.
  8. Copy conscientiously.

What is 'cut-ups' ?

- Tristan Tzara's writing method is 'cut ups'.

- 'Cut ups' doesn's limited text, sound, image, graghics ...etc.

Who is Douglas engelbart?

- Engelbart is most famous inventer.

- He invented the mouse, 2d display editing, hypermedia & hypermedia e-mail, outline processing, multiple window displays, document version control, shared-screen teleconferencing, computer-aided meetings, distributed client-server architecture, virtual terminal protocols, remote procedure call protocols.

What is engelbart's demo in 1968?

- His demo called "THe Mother of All Demos"

After calss

Frankly say, I don't understand this week material. So I understand techer's say hardly.

Anyway, engelbart is genius. Now we use mouse, hypermedia & hypermedia e-mail,demo etc his inventer. It's very amazing.

3월3째주summary

This week we studied about 3 topics.
1. what is the media technologies.
2. A short history of computers.
3. Bush's essay "as we may think"

Media technology is a role 'medium' . when digital media technologies connect or separate people, they become media. Example, at the long ago artists use 'egg white' with colors before invent oil colors. These days car is not just moving machine. Most people think 'car' show one's station. if someone have expensive car he is rich. So 'car' is a role medium. media technology is a like 'egg white' and 'car'. Technologies embody social, political, cultural, economic and philosophical ideas and relationships.

George boole is mathematician and philosopher. His main works is invent Boolean algebra. Boolean algebra is the basis of all modern computer arithmetic.

Charles Babbage is mathematician, philosopher, and mechanical engineer. Babbage had designed for the difference engine, an astonishingly complex device for the 19th century. he originated the idea of a programmable computer.

Vannerbar Bush is inventor of "differential analyzer"
Many report, news, studies result are pour out. All information is not independence. scholars get new idea from the other scholars report. But he cannot find long time ago report. they don't have convenience machine. So, Vannevar Bush think imaginary imgormation machine, the "Mamex".
Memex was based on photoelectric microfilm selector. photoelectric microfilm selector is an electronic retrieval technology pioneered by Emanuel Goldberg. Memex is constantly viewed and cited in relation to subsequent develpments in computing, information retrieval, and hypertext.

ps. We always use computer, specially internet. But I don't think 'who is make internet?'.
Bush is person ago 70 years. though he think imaginary information machine, similar hypertext which is we use now. It's very amazing. Bush is genius.
